WHAT IS DRIFT?
1. GLOBAL DRIFT : Displacement of top storey w.r.t foundation
2. INTERSTOREY DRIFT : Displacement of one storey w.r.t adjacent storey displacement
3. GLOBAL DRIFT RATIO : Ratio of Displacement of top storey w.r.t foundation and the building height
4. INTERSTOREY DRIFT RATIO : Ratio of displacement of one storey w.r.t adjacent storey displacement and Elevation difference between the two stories
SEISMIC DRIFT LIMIT CHECK UBC-97
UBC 97 imposes the drift limitation on interstorey drift ratio:
Limit for interstorey drift ratio depends on time period
For structures with time period T 0.7 limit is 2% (0.02)
For structures with time period T 0.7 limit is 2.5% (0.025)
Maximum inelastic drift
Elastic and inelastic drift ratio
0.025 for structures having a fundamental period of less than 0.7 second.
0.02 for structures having a fundamental period of equal to or greater than 0.7 second
Maximum Inelastic Response Displacement, which is the total drift or total story drift that occurs when the
structure is subjected to the Design Basis Ground Motion, including estimated elastic and inelastic contributions to the total deformation
Design Level Response Displacement, which is the total drift or total story drift that occurs when the structure is subjected to the design seismic forces.
